How to reduce restaurant no-shows: 7 strategies that work
A no-show is a booking that never arrives and never cancels. It sounds minor until you do the math: with 120 bookings a week, a 12% no-show rate, parties of 3 and an average spend of $22, you are losing more than $4,000 a month.
Run your own numbers with our no-show calculator. Here are the strategies that work best.
1. Ask for a deposit
This is the most effective measure. When customers pay a deposit, even a small one, they commit. If they do not show up, the deposit covers part of your loss. In Panama, the most practical options are Yappy and cards. You can require it only on busy dates, weekends or for large groups.
2. Send automatic WhatsApp reminders
Most no-shows are not bad faith: people forget. An automatic message 24 hours before, with buttons to confirm or cancel, lets you release the table in time.
3. Make cancelling easy
It sounds counterintuitive, but if cancelling is easy, customers let you know. If they have to call and nobody answers, they just do not come.
4. Use a waitlist
When someone cancels, a booking system can automatically offer the table to the next person on the list. The table makes money again.
5. Let customers book on their own, 24/7
Phone bookings create errors: misspelled names, mixed-up times, incomplete numbers. An online system records the right data and sends confirmation instantly.
6. Keep a customer history
If a customer has missed twice, the system can require a deposit next time. You protect your schedule without punishing reliable guests.
7. Measure your no-show rate
What is not measured does not improve. Review monthly how many bookings did not show, on which days and at what times.
Conclusion
Combining deposits, WhatsApp reminders and online bookings can cut no-shows dramatically, and it all runs on autopilot.
